London Brit. Lib. Arundel 367 William of Ockham : Summa totius logicae
Date between c. 1400 and 1423
Decoration 1 unfinished miniature (underdrawing), accompanied by a large unfinished initial (f. 3). 1 marginal drawing in red ink (f. 10v). 1 diagram (f. 40). 2 large initials in red, with reserved designs, with elaborate (foliate) pen-flourishing in purple (ff. 95v, 108). Large initials in red with elaborate (foliate) pen-flourishing, sometimes with birds, rabbits, etc. (e.g. ff. 93v-94), in purple. Paraph marks in plain red. Decorated catchwords. Marginal sketch of a hybrid trying to kiss? a figure on its back (f. 18v).

Official foliation ff. 153 (+ 1 modern paper flyleaf at the beginning, and 1 at the end)
Binding BM/BL in-house. Rebound in 1963.

Provenance

Damaged inscription, 13[..]?: '…Frater Johannis fratrum minorum in Anglia ministir', dated 'Babwellye xxvii die mensis martii anno domini mo ccc [xx?]'.
Inscribed, 14th century: 'frater Willelmus Hektoni(?)' (f. 153).
Frater Henricus Geyst, bought by him for 10 s. before 1423: inscribed 'Ista summa fratris Willelmi Hocham pro qua summa dedit frater Henrycus Geyst x s.' (f. 3), and 'Memorandum quod frater Henricus Geyst dedit librum istum ad catinandum in libraria studencium ad perpetuam rei memoriam anno Domini M CCCC XXIII cujus anime propicietur Deus. Amen (f. 152v).
Unidentified owner, second half of the 15th century: inscription and sketch (f. 152).
Inscribed '110' (f. 1) and '70' (f. 3).
? Thomas Howard (b. 1585, d. 1646), 2nd earl of Arundel, 4th earl of Surrey, and 1st earl of Norfolk, art collector and politician.
Henry Howard (b. 1628, d. 1684), 6th duke of Norfolk, presented to the Royal Society in 1667.
The Royal Society, London (its ink stamp: 'Soc. Reg. Lond / ex dono HENR. HOWARD / Norfolciensis.', f. 3v; its book-plate with the pencil inscription: ‘XIII.2.23’, inside upper cover).
Purchased by the British Museum from the Royal Society of London together with 549 other Arundel manuscripts in 1831.
Notes Ff. 1-2 and 153 are medieval parchment flyleaves: at the beginning, a double-leaf with text on f. 2r-v; at the end an inscription (see provenance).
Erased inscription, 14th(?) and 15th centuries (f. 152v; f. 151, lower margin).
